Make a Safety Plan

Your safety is very important. A safety plan is a tool that can help you or someone you know get out of an abusive relationship. It will help you think ahead to how you might protect yourself and respond to an abusive situation. Make a plan BEFORE you are in danger again and have to figure out your options then.

The safety plan should be specific and practical for you. It helps you answer the following questions:

  • What should I do if I am still in the relationship?
  • What should I do if I am leaving the relationship and/or the relationship is over?
  • What should I take with me if I have to leave home for any reason?

Even if you're not dating someone right now, it's a good idea to make a safety plan with your parents. Hopefully, you'll never need to use your plan, but it's good to be prepared. You can use or modify this safety plan. Make it personal and relevant to your life, and review it from time to time with someone you trust.
